Every track by Hip-Hop artist Vighnesh Shivanand aka Brodha V is just like his name — an engaging mix of Hip-Hop and Indian Classical.

His track Aatma Rama earned him several fans online and he also contributed to the song Ready Steady Po from the movie Chennai Express.

Vighnesh’s latest song, Aigiri Nandini, hails girl power, mythology style with the shloka about Hindu goddess Durga who takes the form of Mahishasura Mardini to destroy evil.

Raga meets rap
“I grew up listening to devotional music. At the same time, due to music on television, I was exposed to Hip-Hop as well. One of the first rap songs I heard was Patti Rap, by AR Rahman,” says 24-year-old Vighnesh, in a telephonic chat from Bangalore.

An interesting aspect to the release of Aigiri Nandini was a final goodbye to Orkut. The track was available for free download on September 29 on the social networking site, one day before it was slated to shut down. “I started rapping on Orkut, and came across various artistes on the website too. So as a tribute, we felt it would be a great for us to be on Orkut for one last time,” the artiste shares.

Video vigilante
The video directed by Mikhail Mehra features three women vigilantes. “It is a throwback to the 1980s and the ’90s through the treatment of the video. The song is about women empowerment and the shloka about Goddess Durga killing Mahishasura was apt for the song,” Vighnesh concludes.
