Auckland: Martin Crowe's brother Jeff delivered an emotional address in front of 1,000 mourners at his fellow former New Zealand captain's funeral in Auckland.

"It never really dawned on me how deep it all went, what a huge splash he made, what an inspiration he was for so many," Jeff Crowe told the congregation.

Actor Russell Crowe, a cousin of Martin and Jeff, was among the pallbearers at a service also attended by Greg Chappell — Australia captain in Crowe's first Test — and a NZ contingent including Sir Richard Hadlee and former skipper John Wright.

At Holy Trinity Cathedral, Jeff Crowe added: "Wasim Akram reminded me just the other day that Martin was the greatest batsman he ever bowled to — no higher praise than that."
