Oh! How I want to break free

A first of its kind in the capital, concert theatre will free you from the shackles of society, sexuality, religion and colour

We're so used to a toffee-nosed life that even a momentary thought of liberation frees us from the limits set by a closed mind. Now if the thought is blended with theatres, atleast for few hour's 'we'll be almost free'. So here's a preview of an all-new theatrical presentation, Bring Down The Walls, that brings many firsts as far as theatre is concerned. Keep reading for further dope.

Lushin Dubey and Tom Alter

A theatrical high
When the promotional pamphlets of an upcoming play mention the names of theatre stalwarts like Lushin Dubey and Tom Alter, it's a taken that the best cards will be played. But a theatrical production couldn't get any better if it's topped with the musical genius of 'Gods of rock' Think Floyd. Directed by N Kumar, the production raises apprehensions about stereotypes that have even walled the forms of creative expressions like art, theatre, music, films, fashion and technology. "The play puts across a point that even without 'the fear of embarrassment' the society can function freely. We, not society, should lay down rules for us because at the end of the day, it all boils down to individual freedom," quips Rahul Pulkeshi, producer and actor of Bring Down The Walls.

Of old friendships and memories
The play imbibes five characters each struggling to find space in the society. The dramatic dynamics are divided between two contrasting zones. Reflection is represented through the two characters (played by Tom and Lushin) in a purely textual format, while action is represented by the five other characters (singers) through the musical format. The whole story is brought to life by the lively background score inspired by Pink Floyd's all-time popular album "The Wall". "Tom (Alter) and I play old friends who're reunited after a period of say 25-30 years. We both discuss our individual lives; specially mine because of my husband's sudden disappearance and daughter's unusual sexual choice. Through the narrative we merge feelings of love, friendship, nostalgia and reminiscence. Tom's character is that of a voyeur who hops in and out of the story just like a sutradhaar," says Lushin. "The entire act comes alive with the music of Pink Floyd which is very bohemian in its feel. Plus, it has the nostalgia of college days. Even I've have sung a paragraph in the play. Hope everyone likes it, " she signs off.
