At the time Wang retired, she was leading 21-18, 1-0 in the play-off match.u00a0Wang, the world number 2, was going for a cross-court return when she twisted her left knee and collapsed. Though she resumed and even won the game, she was in a lot of pain and decided to concede the match.u00a0
Saina had earlier become the first Indian to reach the Olympic semi-final in badminton, but was beaten 13-21 13-21 by world number 1 Yihan Wang of China in the semis.
