Noted actor-singer Delna Mody fuses Broadway hits and comedy in her show Broadway Funnies

On a funny note

Music, they say, is the soul of life. And when songs are performed Broadway style, with generous doses of humour thrown in, even the most ardent music hater may well become a convert.u00a0Delna Mody, who was earlier seen in productions such as Good Morning Miss Katya, Life Through The Songs We Like and most recently in Raell Padamsee’s The Sound Of Music, will entertain Mumbaiites in the Broadway Funnies, a solo Musical Broadway Comedy show. The event features 16 of the funniest Broadway songs that will be rendered by Mody in tow with pianist Nadine Jo Crasto in her inimitable style.

Delna Mody will sing the Broadway songs in her inimitable style

Among the numbers she will sing, are iconic ones such as Anything You Can Do, I Can Do Better (from the 1946 Broadway musical Annie Get Your Gun), Paris Makes Me Horny (from the 1995 musical Victor, Victoria) and Poisoning Pigeons In The Park (from American singer-songwriter, satirist, pianist, and mathematician Tom Lehrer’s live album recorded in 1959).

While each of these songs are different in spirit and composition, all of them have hysterical lyrics and memorable tunes and highlight the idiosyncrasies of life. For instance, Anything You Can Do highlights the one upmanship between a man and woman. It’s a duet between Frank, a male singer and Annie, a female singer, who attempt to outdo each other in complex tasks.

They argue playfully about who can, for example, sing softer, sing higher, sing sweeter, and hold a note for longer, and boast of their abilities and accomplishments, such as opening safes and living on bread and cheese, with Annie always countering Frank’s argument.Paris Makes Me Horny depicts how the French capital lives true to its claim of being one of the most romantic cities in the world and brings out the hidden sexual feelings in a woman.

Mody says, “I chose these songs as they tell us about life in a quirky humourous way. Also though they are famous abroad, they are largely unheard in India. So I thought performing them as part of Broadway Funnies will give Mumbaiites an opportunity to hear these cult hits. Also, I will perform them in an acoustic way in an intimate venue which makes the experience very personal for the audience and will hopefully make them guffaw.”
