A one-day-old infant was found abandoned by a girl below the staircase of a residential building that’s opposite Bal Mitra Seva Mandal near Sunder Kamlanagar in Sion.

"The child is healthy but was admitted to the civic-run Sion Hospital," an official said adding an FIR was registered at Sion police station against the infant's mother for abandoning him.

“When I saw the child I called my father and informed him. He later reported to the police,” said Karishma Shirke.

According to police officials, based on preliminary investigations the person who left the child under the staircase absconded on a suburban train.

Senior police inspector B.Z. Gavit of Sion police station, said, “The child is healthy and was admitted to Sion Hospital. He will be presented in junior court tomorrow in Dongri and whether to give him to one NGO will be decided then.”
