One person has died and 12 others have been injured following a cylinder blast at Jagtap chawl in Chembur (E), in Mumbai.

While a chawl collapsed following the mishap, three women have been admitted to the civic-run Rajawadi Hospital in Ghatkopar with severe burn injuries. The deceased has been identified as Mahesh Jagtap (31), who was declared dead on arrival.

Eight patients have sustained minor injuries like cuts and abrasions. They are undergoing treatment in the casualty ward while one male resident has been brought in with 30% burn injuries.

"One of the female patients suffered from 70% burn injuries and her condition is serious. The others are stable as of now," said a doctor from the hospital.

The incident took place on Monday morning after which the injured chawl residents were rushed to the hospital. The doctor further added that the cylinder blast took place in one of the chawls, and that the gas was being used for domestic purposes.
