With government importing onions from Pakistan, prices for the commodity are all set to come down

As the government decided to suspend onion exports until January 15, the prices have gradually come down to Rs 30 a kg. Because of the rise in prices, most hotels in the city, special dishes made of onions such as onion dosas were out from their menus. Not only this, the Hotel Association decided to raise the prices of all items by a small margin.

A spokesperson from Adigas Hotel in Malleswaran said, "The reason for this hike was not because of onions. The prices of petrol, gas, pulses have also gone up and at the same time, the onion prices skyrocketed. Now even if onion prices have come down, we can't immediately reduce prices. This will continue until everything comes back to normal."

Huge quantity of onions has been imported from Pakistan. The prices in some of the wholesale markets were Rs 5,200 per quintal on Tuesday, but now they have come down to Rs 3,700 per quintal.

The retail prices at the Bangalore's KR Market were Rs 30 to Rs 35 per kg. "They are expected to come down further," said one retailer at the KR Market. But some outlets such as Namdharis in Jaynagar were still selling it for Rs 75 per kg. They said they would soon revise the prices.
