At the handicap stage, there were 50 three-year-olds in the fray for the richest juvenile race in the country, the grade 1, Poonawalla Breeders’ Multi-Million (PBMM) to be run on Sunday (Feb 23) at Mahalaxmi, but 39 of them have shied away, leaving only 11 to contest for the rich stakes of Rs 1.82 crore, of which, the winner will take home a cool Rs 1.1 crore!
Among the 11 is Be Safe, the Malesh Narredu-trained got abroad owned by Dr MAM Ramaswamy (by Holy Roman Emperor out of Oriental Lady), who has won all his three races with consummate ease. His main challengers appear to be Solomon (Rebuttal-Dhahab) from trainer Pesi Shroff’s yard, and Bangalore challenger Nesto (Phoenix Tower-Star Qualities) schooled by Bangalore trainer Neil Darashah, with Padmanabhan-trained Eragon, Cooji Katrak-trained Shivalik Storm and Dallas Todywalla-trained Titiana, the last-named being the only filly in the line up.
This is the silver jubilee year for this famous race which was started 25 years ago, and sponsor Poonawallas, in association with the race club, have panned a big bonanza for the day. The first 5,000 entrants will be given free entry, and each one of them will also get a free betting voucher worth Rs 50.
There will also be a 'free contest of skill’, and one who predicts the first four finishers in the PBMM race in the correct order will drive home a Renault Duster car.
