New study by University of Alberta, has asked for researchers, sex educators and marketers of safer-sex paraphernalia need to catch up with the trend

Oral sex becoming a more common activity for young women

Brea Malacad conducted a study on oral sex, which showed that the actu00a0has become a fundamental part of what she calls the "sexual revolutionu00a0of the 21st century".

"From my study, all of the women who had engaged in sexual intercourseu00a0had also engaged in oral sex as well. This data tells us that oral sexu00a0is becoming very much a part of most young people''s sexualu00a0repertoire," said Malacad.

Sex and relationships, Oral sex more common than previously believed

Viral urban myths such as rainbow parties (an alleged group-sex eventu00a0where women, all wearing different coloured lipstick, perform oral sexu00a0on men) and media reports of the "exploitation and over-sexualizationu00a0of young women," as Malacad explains it, was part of the decision tou00a0undertake the study to understand what young women are really doingu00a0and what it means for the teens, parents and for sex education inu00a0general.

Malacad''s findings reveal that behaviours and attitudes towards oralu00a0sex are changing.

Her research shows that while 50 per cent of respondents viewed oralu00a0sex as a less intimate activity than intercourse, 41 per cent believeu00a0oral sex to be as intimate an act as intercourse and the remainingu00a0nine per cent view it as more intimate than intercourse.

And while Malacad''s findings indicate that certainly oral sex hasu00a0become more accepted, she says that the act is hardly the "newu00a0goodnight kiss" among young people as has been suggested in some mediau00a0reports.

The participants'' emotional response to oral sex was also somethingu00a0that surprised her.

"Both intercourse and oral sex were associated with mostly positiveu00a0emotions overall, which suggests that most young women are engaging inu00a0these activities because they enjoy them. Based on the results of myu00a0study, there is a percentage of women (just over 30 per cent) who feelu00a0powerful when performing fellatio. Apparently some women find itu00a0empowering and believe that it can wield a lot of power," saidu00a0Malacad.

The mainstreaming of oral sex is a change in the tide of sexualu00a0behaviour; it also means that sex educators need to catch up to theu00a0trends, noted Malacad.

The study is published in the European Journal of Contraception andu00a0Reproductive Health Care.
