The official website of the Vasai-Virar Mayor's Marathon to be held on October 27, has not listed the full marathon for women, but organisers are open to having an amateur full marathon in that category if they get sufficient participants.
Currently, the races scheduled are as follows: men’s open (42.195 km), men’s open (21.097 km) and women’s open (21.097 km) apart from other categories.
Commenting on why there was no mention of the full marathon for women on the website, Prakash Vanmali, convener, organising committee of the third edition of the race, said: “This is just the third year that we are having the marathon.
Till last year there weren’t many enquiries from women about participating in the full marathon. We cannot have an event only for 10-20 people. “If we get 100 women, who are ready to run the full marathon, we will have an amateur category from this edition itself.
From next year we are anyway planning to include a full marathon for women. We just want the event to grow and are keen to make it bigger and better each year.”u00a0
