Mumtaz Badshah was found in her apartment with her throat slit on February 11. The accused allegedly committed the crime to get rid of the new watchmen that the building had appointed, fearing that his own job was in jeopardy. He hoped the residents would fire the new appointee after the murder, fearing for their safety, the police had said.

Around 600 residents gathered on Saturday and claimed that Rafique, always helpful and respectful, had been falsely implicated. “He was sincere with his work and helped people when needed. We refuse to believe that he has committed the murder,” said Asif Sunasra, the society chairman.

Rafique’s father Mohammad Wali said his son had helped the police with the initial investigation.
