Cyber crime experts in the Capital have warned the government about loopholes in the security of many key websites

Even as Indian websites are facing a barrage of attacks from neighbours across the border, not many of them have upgraded their security say some cyber experts. According to them, most of the government sites have vulnerabilities and they have reported the matter to various organisations, but no action has been taken even after the recent successful attack on the CBI website.

the soldiers killed in 26/11 attack.

"Websites like that of Income Tax of India has loopholes and it can be hacked easily. We have already informed them but they have not patched it yet. Same is the case with the Indian Air Force," said cyber crime expert Sunny Vaghela.

Others have learnt lessons. "Websites like CBI academy and cyber cell Mumbai immediately upgraded their sites' security after the recent attacks," Vaghela added.

Meanwhile Pakistan Cyber Army (PCA) has decided to stop the attacks against the Indian websites and they hope their counterparts here will reciprocate. According to sources, PCA has warned Indians that it has all the capabilities to retaliate at an even larger scale if provoked.

PCA said it hacked CBI's website just to respond to Indian hackers, who had defaced 36 Pakistan government sites. In response to PCA's ceasefire offer, Indian Cyber Army (ICA) said that the objective of launching cyber attacks against Pakistani websites was purely to pay homage to martyrs of 26/11.

"Since our objective was limited to 26/11, we are also putting an end to this cyber attack session. We still own many servers of Pakistan and are prepared to respond to any further attacks from PCA or any other Pakistani hacker group. We are not the right guys to mess around with. Jai Hind!" was posted by one of the hackers of Indian Cyber Army.

The home page of the CBI website had a message from PCA warning the Indian Cyber Army not to attack their websites.

Intelligence agencies have often warned the government that proper cyber security was not being ensured in government offices and that no security audit was being carried out.

"The decision of PCA's cease fire to the cyber attacks against the Indian websites could have arrived due to increasing pressure from government of Pakistan. Authorities on both sides are worried because of the increasing frequency of cyber attacks.

Recently, Indian Minister of IT, Sachin Pilot,u00a0 held a joint meeting with top government officials to express his concerns over the cyber attacks and asked them to strengthen the systems," said Dhruv Soi, director of Torrid networks.

Safety first

In the wake of recent cyber attacks on the website of CBI, the government has said all ministries and departments will have to carry out security audit of their websites before making them available for online visitors.
"It has been decided that all websites of ministries and departments should be audited with respect to quality and security prior to the hosting," Minister of State for Communications and Information Technology Sachin Pilot said.
Besides, the government had instructed the National Informatics Centre (NIC), a body which mans computer servers across the country, to host websites only after the user department produces security certification of their websites.
According to CERT-In, all government websites should be audited for quality and security prior to hosting. CERT-In has empanelled over 50 IT security auditors for check IT infrastructure of the organisations. The minister also said that the number of Indian websites have witnessed a tremendous rise from 1.7 lakh in 2005 to 1 crore websites as of now. This demands the ministries and public sector enterprises pay close attention to cyber security guidelines.

Tangled web

Computer experts have so far failed to unravel the web cast by a group of hackers from Pakistan on India's premier investigating agency CBI's Internet space resulting in a 'dead' website which is not working even after 11 days of the cyber attack.
The website of the agency which collapsed after being attacked by hackers identifying themselves as "Pakistani Cyber Army" on the night of December 2 is still not operational, causing major embarrassment to the CBI. Experts of the CBI and National Informatics Centre who are trying to bring back the website to normal are finding the job too complicated because of software programmes used by the hackers, official sources said.
Experts are also looking at any possible worms or programmes that might have infested the systems of the agency.
