After 3 minor girls raped and murdered in Nehru Nagar, residents no longer depend on cops to track the killer, but join hands with them and patrol the lanes all night

Fear looms large and parents spend sleepless nights at Vatsala Tai Nagar, Kurla, where the body of nine-year-old Nusrat Shaikh was found on Saturday, the girl raped and mutilated. And this is not an isolated incident. With Nusrat being the third girl from the locality meeting a fateful end, the residents of the 4,000-odd homes in Nehru Nagar have taken it upon themselves to crack down on the killer.

"We just want to find this killer," said local corporator Gautam Sable. "Every person is scared. We don't let our children out of our sight, as everyone is afraid their kid may be the next target."

Keeping guard is like a full-time job for these fathers, which goes into the wee hours of morning. Sanjay Pawar, a father of a five-year-old girl, said, "I ensure that my daughter is dropped to school and picked up by a family member every day. I don't allow her to play in the lanes any more; I can't take a chance."

Nehru Nagar residents along with the police have now identified 12 spots in the area, which could be used as hideouts by the rapist on the prowl. "We have broken into homes that were locked to ensure that the killer is not taking refuge in one of them and have resealed the flats. We want the culprit to be nabbed so that the reputation of the area is not tarnished further. We want some peace of mind."u00a0
