So, you have a crush on your pretty, next-door-neighbour? But does your courage evaporate into nervous perspiration every time you decide to start a conversation? Meet Samuel, who has been eyeing the lovely Ima on the metro every day. His crippling shyness lets a whole year zip past without uttering a single word, till a colleague sits him down to explain that life is better off without what-ifs. Find out whether Samuel finally gets around to asking Ima out in Tant Que Tu Respires, at a French film festival that kickstarts in the city today.

The event is put together by The Collective Prod, an organisation based in Cairo and Paris that has taken up the mission of promoting amateur short films. With its Egyptian counterpart, The Center for Artistic and Cultural Development Al Tak3eiba, they will showcase eight short films including documentaries and fiction. "The film fest has a special purpose. We want to show the world how young, independent French filmmakers are able to create and direct thought-provoking cinema. Most of the movies have been produced by the directors themselves, while a few have sought help from friends," says French-Egyptian filmmaker and screenwriter Mirit Mikhail who is also the curator of the fest. Mirit is also looking forward to screening three of her films, which she hopes will lead to freewheeling discussions.
