Despite repeated warnings and even after being beaten up by locals, 22-year-old from Devipada area in Borivli continued to harass women in his neighbourhood
A group of women and a family from Devipada area in Borivli (east) registered a complaint against a serial sexual harasser at the Kasturba police station on Tuesday evening. Accused Pratik Parmar (22), who is currently unemployed, used to climb rooftops in his neighbourhood and peep into people’s houses to look at women changing their clothes or couples in intimate positions at night.
Parmar, who hails from Gujarat lives with his family in Durga Mata chawl at Devipada. Police officials also suspect that he is a drug addict but did not confirm the information. On late Monday night, complainant Avinash Mourya (26) was sleeping at home, when he was jolted out of his sleep at around 2 am by his wife’s screams. His wife said that she saw someone peeking through the window.

However, when Mourya went outside, Pratik had already escaped. Prabhakar Yadav, Assistant Police Inspector (API) of Kasturba police station said that the accused used to look at women in the neighbourhood through exhaust fan ventilators or windows in their houses. He even followed women around at public toilets and peeped through holes in the toilet door while they were in. Parmar confessed to his crime upon interrogation by the police officials. Mourya had also approached local MNS leader Shirish Chaugule with the complaint.u00a0
“Locals were frustrated with his behaviour. Women from the neighbourhood along with Mourya’s family registered a case of molestation against him,” said Chaugale. Pratik Parmar was booked under section 354(C) of the Indian Penal Code. He was produced at Borivli court on Wednesday and remanded to judicial custody. “For the last few months, we’ve been letting him off after warnings but he never took it seriously. We were avoiding filing a complaint as he is a local but the last few weeks have been hell for women in the locality,” Mourya said.u00a0
