PIRANHA 3-D
A; HORROR
Dir: Alexander Aja
Cast: Elisabeth Shue, Steven R McQueen, Jerry O'Connell
Rating: *
WHAT'S IT ABOUT: Sheriff Julie Forester (Shue) has her hands full keeping the law as students on Spring Break make their way to town and as a single mom, counts on her teen son Jake (McQueen) to take care of his siblings Zane (Sage Ryan) and Laura (Brooklyn Proulx). In the grand American tradition, kids never do as they're told and while the younger siblings get stranded on an island, Jake gets aboard a yacht where a soft porn flick shoot is in progress. That's not all. There's something in the water and it's in a mad feeding frenzy. And it's not alone.
WHAT'S HOT: Having Richard Dreyfuss in the opening scene was also a nice touch. The film has a couple of good scares, several pretty (and some recognisable) faces and more than ample skin on display but nothing compares to the work done by the special effects team.
WHAT'S NOT: The film moves at the pace of a TV movie that has absolutely nothing going for it. The stereotypes are there to be exploited. And they are. You know it for a fact that the characters with the most face time are the ones asking to die the most painful deaths, even if you haven't watched films of Piranha's ilk. Moreover, the use of 3-D seems uninventive, unnecessary and does nothing to enhance the experience.
WHAT TO DO: Not recommended for the faint-hearted. Lovers of gore/slasher/monster/horror flick fans will find this a disappointment and quite frankly, a weak laugh.
