The project was initiated by former PMC Commissioner Pravinsingh Pardeshi in 2008 and keenly pursued by subsequent commissioners -- Mahesh Zagade and Mahesh Pathak. The project aims to encourage people to use eco-friendly mode of transportation instead of fuel-guzzling vehicles.
The PMC is funding Rs 3.27 crore while the rest of the amount would be invested by Gujrat-based Kamdhenu Electrical Private Ltd company. The PMC had earlier floated tenders and shortlisted Kamdhenu Electrical for the same.
Raj Janagam, director of Kamdhenu Electrical, said, "We are a social enterprising company, once the project takes off, we will be able to provide 55 employment opportunities and benefit over 1,000 Punekars.
Rent a cycle is already in existence at London, Paris, Barcelona and Montreal. The earlier meeting on December 14 was postponed by five days because of the demise of former PMC deputy mayor Bhagwan Kshirsagar.
