Puneites will now have to pay 60 paise less for a litre of petrol. The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has decided to reduce the octroi on fuel by a per cent. The Standing Committee took this decision yesterday and the general body will forward it to the state government for approval.

The decision will be implemented soon after. While the Shiv Sena and MNS corporators had demanded complete scrap the 2 per cent octroi on fuel, the BJP and Congress-NCP corporators agreed to reduce it by one percentage point only.

"The PMC will have to bear a loss of Rs 25 crore in revenue due to a cutback in octroi by a percentage point. Some developmental projects are bound to get affected. The projects that will be put on hold will be decided later," said Ganesh Bidkar, Standing Committee chairman.

About two months earlier, the proposal to reduce octroi on fuel was brought for discussion, but the feedback of the PMC was awaited. PMC officials said it was not possible to reduce the octroi. Despite the reluctance, the Standing Committee, comprising 16 members from all parties, went ahead and voted on the issue.
