Podcasting couch

My family has always had dogs. When I lived in the States, I was surrogate mother to my roommate's two cats.
And a month ago, I brought home a frightened, sick kitten, who has become the very centre of our lives. Today's column is for people who love (and/or live with) animals.

Two weeks ago, when the silly kitty decided he didn't want to use his litter for his loo anymore (preferring my bed, instead: Grr), I searched the episodes and found tips that really worked clean the litter out, make the new loo unattractive by covering it up with foil yes, my bed was attractively shiny in sheets of foil for a while. There're even tips for what to do if your dog quakes like ours does during thunder storms.u00a0

Another fun, more general Petcast (https://www.thepetcast.com/) covers it all. Check it out you might like the co-hosted style better. It's more dog focused though sometimes they address the occasional lizard-hamster-owl owner!
Better organised is the Animal Wise weekly podcast. You can scroll through past episodes for a general round-up of interesting, newsy things (what does one do with 500 dogs rescued from a dog-fighting ring? What's good pet food and what goes into it?)u00a0

The geek in me, of course, demands space and for the geek in you, here are lectures on animal behaviour that are seriously fascinating: the Animal Behavior Podcast by Roy L Caldwell, who is a professor at Berkeley.

(Search on iTunes or on https://www.learnoutloud.com/). It's a science class in your ear! Check out an episode on how animals choose mates ("My! What a long tail you have!") and communication ("Do animals tell lies?") I love it!

Watch this space for more and DO try this at home! It's all free and your pet will like you more for it.u00a0

How to listen to a podcast
To get your programme, you need first to find it in a directory and then download it using what's called a podcatcher a site or program that pulls the shows into a common place. One program that does both these things for free is iTunes u2014 it's a directory as well as an aggregator. If you don't have iTunes, you can use Juice, Podomatic, Podcast Alley, Odeo, and a plethora of others. I recommend iTunes or Juice for ease of use. Even Google Reader on your iGoogle page and Netvibes will work, though.

Once you're in a podcast directory, you can simply type a keyword in the search field and then click on the "subscribe" field next to the one you want to listen to. It will show up and update itself in your podcast aggregator.u00a0Then you can either listen right there, or you can sync up your mp3 device your Zune/iPod/Creative or even your phone. Download it as an mp3 file andu00a0... voila! You're good to go.
