In an effort to avoid interacting with media on the issue of Congress city MLA Vinayak Nimhan allegedly assaulting a retired air force officer, commissioner of police Gulabrao Pol hastily left Yashwantrao Chavan Academy of Development Administration (YASHADA) yesterday.

Pol was present at the venue to maintain protocol, as chief minister Prithviraj Chavan was addressing reporters. However, when Pol was gheraoed by media persons who wanted to know why no action was taken against Nimhan who allegedly manhandled wing commander (retd) Arun Deshmukh, he
literally ran away from the venue.u00a0

According to the victim, last Sunday, when he was at his plot in Baner to supervise the recently initiated construction of a bungalow, Nimhan and his son arrived at the spot and manhandled him, asking why he had broken the compound wall of the adjacent plot.

However, when Deshmukh reached Chatushrungi police station to file charges against the duo, police registered a Non-Cognisable (NC) complaint under sections 323, 504 and 506 of IPC.

“I came here to meet CM Chavan to share my grievance. He however, promised to look in to the matter, and said he would give orders to take necessary action against the culprits,” said Deshmukh’s wife Anjali. However, when media persons probed Chavan about the issues, he refrained from commenting further, saying that he would first look at what exactly had transpired.

According to Anjali, police didn’t handle this incident sensitively, and therefore there was no any option left with her but to meet Chavan and his deputy Ajit Pawar.

“Dada also listened to me patiently and told the police officials to register a complaint. Now, inspector Ajay Kadam from Chatushrungi has called me to the police station on Friday. However, I don’t have any idea what steps cops will take in this regard,” she added.

Meanwhile, when MiD DAY approached MLA Nimhan, he said that Deshmukh had levelled such charges against him last year too, but they were disproved in the police investigation. “Every time, the matter of cabinet expansion is discussed such allegations are made against me. If the charges made against me are found to be true then I would resign from the post of MLA,” he told MiD DAY.

Commissioner of police Pol disconnected the phone when MiD DAY tried to ask him why he avoided the media rather than replying to the queries. He didn’t pick up any of the calls after this. u00a0

Airport at Chakan, definitely!
While interacting with media CM Chavan said that the proposed international airport at Chakan will be constructed, and there is no doubt about it. “Although there is need of 1,800 hectares of land for the development of airport, which is presently not available, it doesn’t mean that the proposal of the international airport is not on the agenda of the state government,” said Chavan. He, however, avoided speaking on the anticipated Metro project in the city.u00a0
