Even if ceremonies are held, top cop may be too busy ensuring law and order in Mumbai

Police Commissioner may cancel daughter's Sunday wedding

It’s not just the average Mumbaikar who had to cancel/reschedule his weekend plans in the wake of Sena Supremo Bal Thackeray’s demise. The city’s police commissioner Dr Satyapal Singh has also had to reschedule his daughter’s wedding.

Singh had scheduled daughter Richa’s wedding on Sunday afternoon at about 2 pm. The reception was to be held at 8 pm at Hill Top Ground, SRPF Group VIII, near Western Express Highway, Goregaon (W).

However, on Saturday evening the top cop’s wife told this paper that the reception had been cancelled and rescheduling of the main ceremony was also being considered.

Alka Singh said, “Duty comes first. He has been out throughout the day and had to miss the haldi ceremony. We have rescheduled the reception and are yet to decide on the marriage ceremony.”

On Saturday, Singh addressed a press conference at 6.30 pm on Saturday and missed most of the pre-wedding ceremonies that were on at Bandra’s Rangsharda Hall where the rituals were scheduled to continue late into the night.

Singh was busy ensuring that the law and order situation in the city didn’t go out of hand following Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray’s death.

On Sunday, Singh will be busy with the cremation, which is likely to commence at 10 am and may continue till late in the evening. Being the head of the police force, Singh will have to ensure the security of all the VIPs and VVIPs who will visit Mumbai to pay their respects to the late chief.

“Hopefully, the situation will calm down,” said a senior officer.

A source close to the family said that with the city on edge, a majority of the guests — policemen — will not be able to attend the wedding. Considering the difficulty anticipated on the roads as well as the railway tracks, other guests may also have a tough time reaching the wedding venue.u00a0
