Gaus Shaikh arrested in October last year has gone into hiding after getting bail; had named clerk from university during interrogation
The Chatushringi police are having a hard time in their bid tobring all those involved in the alleged revaluation scam at the University of Pune (UoP) to book, and now the main accused in the case has vanished from the scene. Kingpin Gaus Shaikh, accused of providing dummy students and running a ghostwriter racket in the Poona College was arrested in October last year. He had revealed during interrogation that he used Salim Shaikh, a junior clerk at the university, and his links in the UoP’s examination department to inflate marks of students in the revaluation process. The Cantonment police arrested Gaus, but he was later released on bail, after which he has been absconding.

“After arresting Salim, our main target is to arrest Gaus. He has been absconding after he secured bail,” said Assistant Police Inspector Mahesh Bolkotgi of the Chatushringi police station. Police Inspector Ajay Kadam of the same police station said that after Salim’s arrest, their main aim would be to nab Gaus, who could shed more light on the scam.
In custody
Salim, who was rearrested on Tuesday evening, was produced before the court in Shivajinagar and remanded in police custody till February 3. While demanding police custody, Bolkotgi told the court that Salim with help from junior clerks, namely Ramesh Shelar (43), Ashok Ranavade (44), and Chetan Parbhane (38), had got marks of 21 students — mostly foreign nationals — increased in the revaluation scam. Bolkotgi also told the court that the investigating officers should also ascertain whether Salim had paid anyone in the examination department to increase the marks, and from how many students he has taken money.u00a0
