Police officials said apart from being unemployed, Mustafa was a drug addict and an alcoholic. They suspect him of committing the crime in an intoxicated state.

PSI G D Ghawate of the Kalwa police station said, “We reached the spot at 10 am after the victim’s sister Nasima Salim Shaikh informed us about the incident. Nasima said she saw her sister’s dead body lying on the floor after she unlocked the door. The accused might have killed her under the influence of alcohol. We have despatched two teams to trace him.”

Nasima would visit Yasmin on a regular basis as her maternal family resided nearby. Nasima had gone to visit Yasmin at 9.30 am on Monday.

Officials said Yasmin and Mustafa had a love marriage and the couple had eloped in the past as their families were against their marriage. They said Mustafa’s earlier name was Ajay Jadhav and he converted to Islam to marry Yasmin.

According to the Yasmin’s mother Fatiza, Mustafa would always beat her daughter after consuming alcohol. She said since he was jobless, they took care of their daughter’s household needs. u00a0
