Ricky Ponting backs Glenn Maxwell for taking "mental and physical break"

Delhi Capitals head coach Ricky Ponting on Tuesday backed Glenn Maxwell for taking a "mental and physical break" saying that the constant pressure of being an RCB star player made him take that break. Maxwell has taken such a break for the second time in his career. Following the disappointing scores with the willow, the all-rounder himself asked the management to not pick him in the playing XI for the IPL 2024 match against Sunrisers Hyderabad. "For someone like Glenn in that team (RCB), he being one of the 'Big Dogs' along with Virat, a lot of pressure comes on couple of players playing in that team. If they don't perform, the results tend to not follow them," Ponting, who has seen Maxwell from close quarters, told PTI in an exclusive interaction. Coming to the RCB's IPL 2024 campaign, the team has just won one match and has lost six games out of seven. They are currently placed in the 10th position of the points table. "If you see what they have done in the tournament so far, pressure builds up on individual player as well. I read that article today morning that Glenn wants to step aside, just have a few games off and try and refresh," Ponting said, adding that every individual has its own coping mechanism. Also Read: IPL 2024 | Dinesh Karthik: An absolute match-winner! "Every individual is different right. Some guys would want to get going and push through that and get some runs on board and thus that will change their way of how they think about the game and some guys need to step back and have a break," the legendary Aussie and three-time World Cup winner explained. Ponting feels it becomes very important for the coach of a team to prioritize a player's mental well-being. "That's why one needs to be really understanding as a coach now that anyone who is around the cricket team, their health and well-being and welfare of the players is something you think about first." While representing in international sport, Ponting feels that it is important to have one's family around. "With more and more cricket being played, a lot of times you are away from home when you play international sport. You are away from all the things that make you happy, that certainly is the biggest part of what we do, coaching or playing. "I am lucky to have my family now and I have had them here for a few weeks. It makes it a bit easier for me having spent a lot of time away from my family," Ponting added. On Monday, Maxwell came for the press conference and revealed that he himself volunteered for a break. "For me, personally, it was a pretty easy decision. I have been in this situation in the past where you can keep playing and get yourself deeper into a hole" Maxwell said on Monday night.  "I felt like I wasn't contributing with the bat, and with the results and the position we find ourselves on the table, I think it's a good time to give someone else an opportunity to show their wares, and hopefully, someone can make that spot their own," he added. IPL 2024 | "We try to maximise Power Play": Head reveals SRH batting approach

Sunrisers Hyderabad have taken T20 batting to the next level by displaying power-hitting in the IPL 2024. Following their record-setting 287 runs, Travis Head said that attacking powerplay was their central focus. Head's century which came in 39 balls helped SRH put 287 for three against Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the 30th IPL 2024. It was the second time Head completed his half-century in the first six overs of the IPL 2024 match. "We've definitely got a lot of power through our top and middle-order and I think we've sort of got to tailor the way we want to play around that power that we've got, especially in power play", said Head in the post-match press conference. The Australian opener has a perfect ally at the top in an equally belligerent Abhishek Sharma, who blunts slower bowlers upfront while Head goes about destroying the pacers. Also Read: IPL 2024 | Dinesh Karthik: An absolute match-winner! I guess Abhi and I at the top of the order try to maximise that (Power Play) as much as we can. It may be fours, it may be sixes. But yeah, we want to try to attack the power play with the two of us and then obviously we've got a lot of power through that middle-order, Head added. It wasn't a mere tall claim as a quick check will reveal SRH's power play scores in six matches this season as 65/1, 81/1, 58/1, 78/1, 40/3 and 76/0, and none of the other nine teams have come close to those numbers. But it was not blind hitting. Head revealed his approach in the initial six overs. Depending on the field positions, I try to sum up what the bowlers are trying to do. In the power play, with just two fielders out, I try to think about hitting the ball 360, around the whole ground, as you only have to go over the infield or through the infielders for boundaries. Also Read: IN PHOTOS | IPL 2024, RCB vs SRH: A T20 blockbuster! I'd worked on a few things over the last couple of days. I did not execute the way I would have liked (in the last two matches). But today, especially in the power play, I was able to strike the ball the way I wanted, said the left-hander. The 30-year-old also lauded Hyderabad bowlers, especially skipper and premier pacer Pat Cummins, for holding their nerves when RCB batters were scoring briskly. We knew that we probably needed three or four really good overs in the game to win it. So, it's amazing to sit here and think that when we make 280, but it's going to be one of the nights for the bowlers to hold on and I thought Pat bowled exceptionally well. We were able to get wickets throughout the middle of the overs which set the game up. DK (Dinesh Karthik) played an unbelievable innings. But we did really well to get them back at 125 or 130 for five, he added. While chasing the target, RCB wicketkeeper-batsman Dinesh Karthik played an exceptional knock. The veteran scored 83 runs in just 35 balls but fell short to take the team home. SRH won the IPL 2024 against RCB by 25 runs. (With PTI Inputs)

IPL 2024 | Dinesh Karthik: An absolute match-winner!

Following the IPL 2024 match between Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Sunrisers Hyderabad at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Dinesh Karthik proved that he still has the skill set. SRH won the match by 25 runs after posting 287 on board. Despite the fall of wickets, wicketkeeper-batsman Dinesh Karthik did not let the hopes of the home crowd go down. The 38-year-old batsman scored a remarkable 83 runs off just 35 deliveries. His knock was laced with 5 fours and 7 sixes. Despite a spectacular batting effort, the veteran fell short to take the team home as he nicked into the hands of Heinrich Klaasen. Karthik not only raised the hopes of the home crowd but also defined the real meaning of "Play Bold" through his knock. Also Read: IN PHOTOS | IPL 2024, RCB vs SRH: A T20 blockbuster! This is not the first time that Karthik proved his worth in the team. In the previous games of the IPL 2024, Karthik scored an unbeaten 53 runs in 23 balls against MI, 20 off 8 balls against KKR, 28 off 10 balls against PBKS and 38 runs in 26 deliveries against CSK in the opener. Even in the international tournaments, Krthik has his footprints marked as the match-winner. One of the most memorable matches where Karthik played a heroic knock was during the Nidahas Trophy final in 2018. Having to win five runs in one ball and that over-the-covers six by Karthik helped India defeat Bangladesh and clinch the title. He scored an unbeaten 29 runs in just eight deliveries including 2 fours and 3 sixes. Also Read: IPL 2024, MI vs CSK: Supportive Blues or continuos boos for Hardik Pandya? He has the ability to turn the game in his favour. In the T20 format, featuring in 349 innings, the 38-year-old accumulated 7,307 runs including 34 half-centuries. Coming to the IPL 2024 campaign of RCB, the team has so far played seven matches out of which have come victorious on just one occasion. Dinesh Karthik is currently 10th on the list for the most runs in the ongoing IPL 2024 season. He has scored 226 runs in 7 matches and has two fifties to his name. The team is left with a few more matches in which they need to secure victories in most of them to qualify for the playoffs of the IPL 2024.

IPL 2024: Glenn Maxwell takes "mental and physical" break

Royal Challengers Bengaluru all-rounder Glenn Maxwell decided to take a "mental and physical" break from the IPL 2024 after his disappointing form in batting. Maxwell did not feature in the IPL 2024 match against Sunrisers Hyderabad at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium which was initially attributed to a finger injury. He sustained this injury during the clash against Mumbai Indians. "It was a pretty easy decision. I went to Faf and the coaches after the last game (vs Mumbai Indians) and said it was probably time we tried someone else (in his place)," Maxwell said in the post-match press meet. "It's actually a good time to give myself a bit of a mental and physical break, get my body right. If I'm required to get in during the tournament, I can, hopefully, get back into a solid mental and physical space where I can make an impact," he added. Also Read: IN PHOTOS | IPL 2024, RCB vs SRH: A T20 blockbuster! This is not the first time, the veteran opted out of the game. Previously in 2019, he cited the reason of mentally and physically ruined to take a break from the game. Later on, he made a comeback after two months. In the IPL 2024, Maxwell is yet to put on an impressive show with the willow. In six matches, he has only scored 32 runs at an average of 5.33 and a strike-rate of 94. Twenty-eight of those 32 runs came against Kolkata Knight Riders alone, helped to a great degree by two dropped catches. "I have been in this situation in the past where you can keep playing and get yourself deeper into a hole. We have had a pretty big deficiency after the power play, which has been my area of strength over the last couple of seasons. "I felt like I wasn't contributing with the bat, and with the results and the position we find ourselves on the table, I think it's a good time to give someone else an opportunity to show their wares, and hopefully, someone can make that spot their own," a candid Maxwell said. The big-hitting Australian, however, still hoped to return and make an impact in the later stages of the tournament. "The management here has been outstanding. I don't think I've had a better six months in cricket leading into this tournament. "So, it's frustrating when it ends up like this. But if I can get my body and my mind right, there's no reason I can't finish the tournament well if I do get another opportunity," he said. The sudden dip in his form was surprising as from November onwards, he scored 552 runs in 17 T20I matches. But the Victorian started the IPL 2024 with a first-ball duck against Chennai Super Kings in an away match, and from that point his fortunes plummeted. "T20 cricket is a pretty fickle game. Even if you look at the first game, I ran one off the middle of the bat to the keeper. I picked up the length, saw a scoring opportunity, but opened the face a little bit too much. "When you are going well, that goes wide of the (wicketkeeper's) gloves, you get a boundary. You are 4 off 1, and you are away for the tournament," he noted. "I probably just haven't got away. In the first few games, I feel I made reasonably good decisions (for shot selection). But I was finding ways to get out. "It can happen in T20 cricket and when it snowballs like that, you can go searching and try too hard and forget the basics of the game," he said. Maxwell experienced a similar barren run in IPL 2020 while playing for Punjab Kings. During that season, the Australian scored a mere 108 runs from 11 matches and failed to hit a single six. However, Maxwell did not draw parallels between the two seasons. "I was bowling really well back then. I was actually playing more as a spinner. We had KL (Rahul) and Mayank (Agarwal) who were the two leading run-scorers at that time. "So, there weren't a lot of balls left in the game (for him). I wasn't able to get any match rhythm. So, I said the same thing to the Punjab management that we can have an overseas bowler in my place. "But we didn't have an off-spinner, so, I sort of played as an overseas off-spinner who could bat a little bit," he explained. (With PTI Inputs)

Gavaskar hails Underwood’s skill in tribute to late spin great

Derek Underwood, England’s best spinner in the post-World War II era, who gave a torrid time to the legendary Sunil Gavaskar, passed away at Kent on Monday. He was 78. Underwood, a practitioner of slow left-arm orthodox spin, was highly regarded by his contemporaries because of his pin-point accuracy, something which made him ‘Deadly’ on uncovered pitches of the 60s and 70s. Also Read: ‘Absolutely ordinary bowling and ordinary captaincy’ The Bromley-man had numbers to match his reputation too—297 wickets from 86 Tests, the most by an England spinner, and in a First-Class career that spanned 24 years he took 2,465 wickets. Gavaskar too had admitted Underwood’s grip on him. It was tough to face Underwood in any conditions. He was so accurate and bowled on the stumps. “Since he had this ability to bowl quick when he wanted, you had to be in position very early to play the shots. He was the toughest bowler I faced along with Andy Roberts,” Gavaskar had mentioned recently. This story has been sourced from a third party syndicated feed, agencies. ‘Absolutely ordinary bowling and ordinary captaincy’

Star India all-rounder Hardik Pandya faced scathing criticism from prominent former players after Mumbai Indians’s (MI) fourth loss with the great Sunil Gavaskar slamming him for his “absolutely ordinary bowling and ordinary captaincy” so far. Booed and heckled by fans ever since he took over MI’s captaincy, Pandya found himself in the line of fire of the legendary Gavaskar and former England captain Kevin Pietersen after his team slumped to yet another defeat, this time to Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at Wankhede on Sunday night. Also Read: IPL 2024: Head's century, Cummins' 3 wickets helps SRH beat RCB by 25 runs It was the 26 runs that Pandya conceded in the final over with MS Dhoni going hammer and tongs, which proved to be decisive as CSK notched up a 20-run win over MI. “Oh, absolutely ordinary bowling, ordinary captaincy. They should have been restricted despite the fact that Ruturaj Gaikwad had batted so well along with Shivam Dube. I do believe that they should have been restricted to 185-190,” Gavaskar told Star Sports. “Probably the worst kind of bowling that I’ve seen for a long, long time. “It almost looks like I’ve had this embrace with my hero. I’ve got the kind of deliveries that he’s gonna hit for sixes. One six is fine. The next one is a length ball when you know this batter is hunting for a length ball that he wants to hit. “Third ball is again a full toss on the legs when you know he [Dhoni] is looking for a six.” Pandya finished with figures of 2-43 from his three overs. IPL 2024: Head's century, Cummins' 3 wickets helps SRH beat RCB by 25 runs

When the most powerful batting line-up of the competition runs into the weakest bowling attack on the flattest of surfaces, the outcome is generally predictable. So it was at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium on Monday night as Sunrisers Hyderabad laid into Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s shell-shocked bowlers, muscling their way to 287 for three, the second highest total in all T20s. At the time of going to press, RCB were 122-5 in 10 overs. SRH had smashed 277 for three just last month, the highest total in IPL history. Coming into this game, it was on the cards that they could better that against an RCB line-up that had lost its last four matches and was low on confidence and morale. Also Read: IPL 2024: Rajasthan to take on Kolkata at the Eden Gardens Faf du Plessis must be ruing his decision to field first, a decision influenced by the ground’s reputation as a chasing venue. RCB rang in the changes, leaving out the underperforming Glenn Maxwell and Mohammed Siraj and handing a debut to Lockie Ferguson, the New Zealand quick. SRH took full toll of the RCB bowling. After a misleadingly quiet first over from offie Jacks that yielded only five, Abhishek Sharma watched from the best seat in the ground as Travis Head (102, 41b, 9x4, 8x6) got down to business. Fours and sixes flowed off his willow with astonishing regularity as the Aussie left-hander brought up the fourth fastest IPL century, in just 39 deliveries. While Head understandably took most of the accolades, dominating an opening stand of 108 with Abhishek, Heinrich Klaasen (67, 31b, 2x4, 7x6) played a gem of his own. Promoted to No. 3 to cash in on the spectacular opening salvo, the South African matched his Aussie partner stroke for stroke, including a monstrous 106-metre six off Ferguson over long-on that cleared the stadium. Aiden Markram and the ferocious Abdul Samad then applied the finishing touches, the latter needing a mere 10 balls for his unbeaten 37. RCB conceded 19 fours and 22 sixes, and their plight was best illustrated when Saurav Chauhan put down Samad at deep mid-wicket off the last ball of the innings. SRH blasted 82 in the last five, narrowly missing out on becoming only the second team in all T20s to touch 300, but hey, 287 isn’t too shabby, is it? Brief scoresSRH 287-3 in 20 overs (T Head 102, H Klaasen 67, A Samad 37*, A Sharma 34, A Markram 32*; L Ferguson 2-52) v RCB (scores incomplete)
