The elections have netas sweating it out this summer, but they have brought a cool spell for Mumbaikars.

Unwilling to create what could become an election issue at this crucial juncture, the authorities have stalled another hike in electricity bills for two months. The hikes, which were to be implemented this month, will now come into effect in June.

"We don't want to create an issue by bringing in new tariffs during election-time. We will introduce it in May, once the election results are out," said a senior Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC) official.

MERC was supposed to decide the increase in tariffs based on the demands of the power companies by mid-April.

Hike unavoidable

The BEST, which supplies power to the island city, has proposed a hike of more than 45 per cent, while Reliance Infrastructure the supplier for suburbs has asked for a 30 per cent hike. "Hike inu00a0 bills cannot be avoided, but MERC will not allow such a steep rise," said a power expert.

V Raja, chairman, MERC, refused to comment due to the ongoing code of conduct.
