Ponting all set to retain his place in Oz Test squad

Ricky Ponting, who is under enormous pressure to quit, will be retained for the first Test against New Zealand.

Ponting will avoid the selection axe for the Gabba Test against New Zealand, with skipper Michael Clarke ready to fight for his inclusion for the entire Australian summer.

The Daily Telegraph reports that Ponting will be retained in the squad regardless of whether all-rounder Shane Watson is cleared of a hamstring injury.

There has been a growing push for the new selection panel to jettison Ponting.

But after watching Ponting's match-turning 62 at the Wanderers, Clarke will demand his former skipper be selected to face the Black Caps when he formally convenes with the revamped panel comprising of John Inverarity, Rod Marsh and Andy Bichel.
