The Daily Telegraph reports that Ponting will be retained in the squad regardless of whether all-rounder Shane Watson is cleared of a hamstring injury.
There has been a growing push for the new selection panel to jettison Ponting.
But after watching Ponting's match-turning 62 at the Wanderers, Clarke will demand his former skipper be selected to face the Black Caps when he formally convenes with the revamped panel comprising of John Inverarity, Rod Marsh and Andy Bichel.
