Mumbai: 35-year-old duped of Rs 1.7 lakh in 'custom' made scam

When Rajshri (name changed), a resident of Powai accepted the friend request of a man named Bayan Illians VVN on Facebook, little did she know it would end up costing her Rs 1.73 lakh. Police sources say this is the fourth such incident to be reported within a month from the same area.

Sent her gifts
Plagued with loneliness since her husband would be away for months on his job in the merchant navy, the 35-year-old – who lives in Powai’s Ashok Nagar area with her two kids – had opened an account on the social networking site. She befriended Bayan earlier this month. Soon after, their daily interactions gave way to a deeper friendship. Bayan had told Rajshri that he is based in London. To allegedly make her believe this, he started sending her expensive gifts like a laptop, camera, music system, etc.

Now, pay up
After a few days of doing this, he told Rajshri that he has sent a few items that need to be cleared from customs for which she has to pay Rs 39,000, which she transferred to the account no.xxxxx66398. A few days later, she got a call from a woman who claimed she works in the customs department. She asked her to transfer Rs 1,34,000 to the same account for another package that is awaiting clearance.

She was asked to do this as soon as possible otherwise the customs will consider these packages as those sent by terrorists with wrong intentions and she can be arrested for the same. Scared of the threat, Rajshri immediately transferred the money.

But, her package never arrived. Curious to know what became of her package, she called the customs official’s number but couldn’t get through. She tried to contact Bayan, but was unable to speak to him either.

FIR filed
Suspecting that she may have been scammed, Rajshri then approached the Powai police to register a complaint against Bayan and the woman. The cops have registered a case as under section 419 (cheating by personation), 420 (Cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property) of the Indian Penal Code and Section 66(d) of the IT Act.

Rs 39k
Amount the victim was asked to pay for the first package sent by her friend
