Prachi Shah of The Blossoms Sunderbai Thackersey English High School (Marine Lines) won a gold medal in the Mumbai Schools Sports Association (MSSA) inter-school girls U-10 judo championship at the District Sports Office (DSO) Sports Complex in Dharavi on Saturday.

The eight-year-old scored an ippon (see box) against Prarthna Bhoi of The Byramjee Jeejeebhoy Parsee Charitable Institution (Charni Road) to win her maiden judo title in the over 49kg category. Aditi Gaikwad of The Alexandra Girls' English Institution (Fort) and Mishka Shetty of Ryan International (Goregaon) won the bronze medal.

The Class Three student revealed she was surprised to win the medal. "My parents enrolled me in judo classes only three months ago to learn self defense. It was my coach Shashikant (Shetty) sir who asked me to participate in the inter-school tournament to gain experience. Once I progressed to the bronze medal round, I was really happy. Winning a gold is a bonus," she said.
In the boys' U-10 final of the U-21 kg category, Dhir Shah of VIBGYOR High (Goregaon) beat Aadil Badhra of The Byramjee Jeejeebhoy Parsee Charitable Institution (Charni Road) to win the gold medal. While Naimein Mamtora and Dhruv Darji won the bronze medal.
