If Jlo and Jessica Simpson can, so can Shama Sikander. Shama who? Did we just hear that? Okay, for those who don't know their daily soaps, she is (was?) a television actress who grew popular for her role in Ye Meri Life Hai. She's back in the news not for a role but a boutique in Bandra she recently launched.

Saisha stocks handbags, shoes, dresses, gowns, salwar suits and saris that Shama designs, and one run through the cosy space opposite St Peter's Church and you can tell she is biased towards western wear. We even spotted the peach-coloured silk number that she wore at the store launch. Two straight rows on either side offer a collection that you can take in all at once but each piece is significantly different to offer a varied choice. The range of shoes includes boots, pumps, peep-toes and chappals, all generously sprinkled with bling.
The bag lover is sure to grin in here. Hobos with ruffles, gemstone clutches and feathered bags (without making the proud owner look like Cruella de Vil) are interesting finds.

For formal occasions, Saisha has elegant Pakistani salwar suits that start at Rs 10,000. Rich fabrics, beaded collars, gold embroidery and intricate motifs give traditional wear a stylish freshness. You are free to bring your own designs to the store; they'll custom make it for you and deliver within a week.

It's all looking rosy until we indulge in some friendly banter with the store attendant. "Our store is mostly for thin people," she says. "We don't stock too much for healthy people, but if they like something here, we can have it made to fit." Politically incorrect perhaps but the custom-made service is definitely worth
a mention.u00a0

u00a0While Saisha claims to have maximum footfall for the casual wear, the range didn't throw up anything extraordinary. Jackets, ponchos, skirts and tubes offer adequate options for party wear but aren't very different from what most Bandra boutiques offer. The evening gowns (Rs 35,000) might pinch the pocket but are good enough to make you want to walk the red carpet.u00a0u00a0

The actress-turned-designer, who we caught up with later, says she been meaning to launch her own label for two years but her acting assignments didn't leave her with much time. Sonam Kapoor, Simone Singh and Preity Zinta are the women, she believes, have a great sense of style. What about Sushmita Sen? Wasn't she the one who inaugurated the store, in fact?
