The Sessions Court at Sewree on Tuesday granted a day’s protection to gangster-turned-real estate developer Ashwin Naik, pending the hearing of arguments. This means cops can’t arrest Naik in that stipulated period. On Monday, MiD DAY had reported (‘Ashwin Naik booked for assaulting BMC contractor’) how NM Joshi Marg police had registered a case against Naik for allegedly thrashing 37-year-old Dhiraj Gohil.

Bharat Mane, Naik’s advocate, said, “The dispute is an entirely civil matter. Initially, the case was registered as an NC, under sections 323 and 504. But this was later changed to an FIR and section 387 was added.” The complaint was lodged by Gohil, a resident of Prabhu Niwas, Sane Guruji Marg, Lower Parel. He was allegedly called by Naik on Friday to his office at Subhash Nagar, NM Joshi Marg, and beaten up and threatened by his men. On Tuesday, the crime branch granted Gohil police protection.

On the safe side
“I had applied for protection and the request has been granted. I am waiting for the escort to come. If Naik ever gets out, there will be a serious threat to my life,” Gohil said.u00a0The case relates to a property dispute. Gohil claimed that a year ago, he had shown his cousin Purnima a room at Saat Rasta, which she purchased for Rs 15 lakh. A few months later the room was demolished by BMC but the owner Ramesh Bansode rebuilt it and gave possession to Purnima.

Since the premises were in controversy, Purnima began pressurising Gohil to recover her money. Gohil assured to take the room off her hands and asked for two months to make the payment. Meanwhile, Bansode too promised Purnima that he would return her money. Gohil then suggested they settle the matter between themselves. But, after not getting her money for some time, Purnima allegedly approached Ashwin Naik.u00a0
