Nobody likes a clumsy diner, but a 24-year-old youth got so enraged when another man bumped into his table, that he decided to teach him some table manners by slicing his head with a chopper. The victim had to get more than 30 stitches after he was attacked by the accused and his gang of friends.

The victim – identified as Suraj Chandrakant Sankalp (25), a medical representative from Bibwewadi – went out for dinner in Gultekdi with his friends on Sunday. Around 11.30 pm, they finished their meal, but as Suraj rose from the table, he lost balance and ended up kicking a nearby table, where the accused – Rohit Daime (24) was seated.

“All our friends live in the same locality, and we planned a get-together with another school friend at Sai Sagar, a restaurant near our house. My friend Suraj lost control while getting out of his chair, so his leg touched another table. Suraj was sorry, but the accused, Rohit, started abusing him. By the time we paid the bill, Rohit had called three of his friends, and one of them had a chopper in his hand, recalled the victim’s friend Sagar Sonawane, who filed the police complaint.

“Rohit started stabbing Suraj. I informed the police, but before they could arrive, Rohit had stabbed Suraj twice in his head and once in his hand,” he added. Suraj was rushed to Kamla Nehru hospital, and is currently under observation there.

The Swargate police caught Rohit and one of his friends, Nikhil Shinde, while the other two are on the run. They have all been booked for attempt to murder (Section 307), public nuisance (Section 268) and common intention (Section 34) under the Indian Penal Code.

Inspector (Crime) Ram Rajmane of Swargate police station said, “We rushed to the spot and arrested Rohit and Nikhil, while two other are on run. Rohit has a past record of petty theft cases and was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident.” On Tuesday, the arrested duo was produced in court and was remanded to three days of police custody.
