The Nashik police on Sunday booked nine members of the Jaat Panchayat Samiti from Pune's Kashi Kapadi community on charges of illegally locking up a widow and practising superstition on her.

A complaint was lodged at Yeola police station by Komal, the victim's child, an official attached to the police station said.

"The community members forced Komal's mother to take a bath by applying ghee on her head in front of her husband's body and later took away her ornaments ten days after her father's death. They also locked her mother in a dark room for a day,'' the official added.

The police have registered a case against the members of the Samiti under Indian Penal Code sections 342 (wrongful confinement) and 3(2) of the Anti-Superstition and Black Magic Act.

According to a cop at Yeola Police station, the victim's child had initially lodged a complaint via email at the Faraskhana police station on December 31, but no action was taken.
