A 19-year-old girl’s first Diwali celebrations with her husband turned into a nightmare when she walked in on two robbers who had broken into her brother-in-law’s house, and who then proceeded to assault and gang-rape her there.

The incident took place around 7 pm on Saturday, at Wadki village near Dive Ghat, about 25 km from Pune city.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (Pune Rural), Dr Vaishali Kadukar, who is investigating the case, said, “The survivor is newly married, and this was her first Diwali at her husband’s house. On Saturday around 7 pm, she had gone to light a lamp near the tulsi pot outside the house, when she noticed the door of her brother-in-law’s house — right next door — was open.

She thought he had returned from work, and went to ask him for snacks. She noticed two pairs of shoes in the corridor outside. At that very moment, there was a power outage there, and the lights went out.”

She added, “The survivor found the men wearing gloves and masks, robbing the house and raised an alarm. But there was no one in the house or the nearby area to hear her. Threatening her at knifepoint, the robbers banged her head on the windowpane, due to which she fell unconscious, and she was raped by the duo. Her husband, who works as an electrician, came home around 12.30 am and found her in that room. He then called the police control room and alerted us.”

The survivor was rushed to Sassoon General Hospital and was declared out of danger. However, she is in trauma, and due to the darkness in the room, is unable to recollect and describe the culprits.

The police are hunting for eyewitnesses in the area, an officer stated, adding that a case of robbery (392) and gang-rape (376G) has been registered at the Loni Kalbhor police station against two unidentified persons.
