The deceased was identified as Obyeka Anwanbukwa (35), resident of flat number 3 in Akshar Bhavan Society, Bhau Nagar. The incident took place at 8.30 pm, when a team from the Anti-Narcotics Cell (ANC) arrived at his residence.

“A team of seven ANC officials from Mumbai had come as they suspected Anwanb-ukwa was involved in drug peddling. After seeing the cops, he tried to escape and jumped from the third floor of the building,” said Deepak Jadhav, police sub-inspector at Sangvi police station, where the first information report (FIR), was filed.

He added, “Anwanbukwa had been staying at the residence for the past six months, and was not working anywhere in Pune.”

During his attempt to escape, Anwanbukwa slipped and fell on the ground, and then got up and ran for about 200 metres before the cops caught up with him.

Satnam Gill, an eyewitness residing in the same building, said, “I heard a loud sound and saw that Anwanbukwa was trying to break the window grill with his leg. After the grill fell, he jumped from the window and landed on a ledge, but slipped and fell on the ground. I saw five cops in plainclothes who gave chase and finally caught him.”

The Nigerian was taken to Aundh Hospital, where he was discharged after primary medical treatment. The ANC team was about to take him to Mumbai when he complained of feeling uneasy. He was rushed back to the hospital, but was declared dead on arrival at 12.30 am. His body was sent to Sassoon Hospital for post-mortem, and his friends were informed of the incident, said PSI Jadhav.

‘He jumped in panic’
Anwanbukwa’s friend, Zee Zulu, alleged that he had jumped in panic after the ANC team began intimidating him. She said, “The ANC team knocked on the door and went inside. Without giving any intimation that they were cops, they started shouting at him, accusing him of peddling drugs. Anwanbukwa panicked and jumped out of the window.”
