In another shocking instance of gangrape, a 23-year-old woman, on Tuesday was allegedly kidnapped and raped by four men including her friend in Warje, Pune on the pretext of get-together. The accused have been arrested.

The incident came to light when the girl approached Warje Malwadi police in the same condition. She was then rushed to hospital. Warje Malwadi police have arrested her friend Vikrant Sudhir Hirve (27), Manish Govind Rathi (31), Nikhil Rajendra Jadhav (23), and Mayur Rajendra Kamble (29) under relevant sections of Indian Penal Code such as molestation (354), Gang rape (376D) assault (323) and an act done with common intention (34).
The girl hails from Amrawati and had come to Pune two years back to pursue higher education. She initially worked in a call centre but currently she works in a private retail company in Pune as an auditor.
Anuja Deshmane, in-charge of Warje Malwadi police station, said, “She met Vikrant through one of their mutual friends and developed a good friendship with him in the last four months. On Monday evening, the two had decided to meet for dinner since they had not seen each other for a long time. Around 7 pm, Vikrant picked up the girl in his car. Later, they drove to Vikrant’s friend Nikhil’s place, because they had to attend an engagement ceremony in a church. Two other friends joined them in the car. Later, the girl was made to sit in the car ill the four accused returned.”
Forced to drink alcohol
He added, “Around 11.30 pm, four of them turned up and the girl was forced to sit in the back seat, between two boys. Later, all of them had dinner at Dehu Road-based Sahara Hotel and she was forced to drink alcohol by Vikrant and his friends.
After the dinner, when all of them were drunk, the girl was made to sit between two boys once again, to which she objected.
Later, Vikrant, Mayur and Nikhil pulled her into the car and molested her. The girl tried to call 100 to alert the police, but Vikrant snatched the phone and all of them gang-raped her. They gagged her and threatened to kill her if she told anyone about the incident.
They told her that even the police can’t arrest them. Two hours after the incident, the girl was pushed from the car at Warje Malwadi bus stand and in the same condition, she approached us and we have arrested the culprit.”
Remanded in custody
All four have been arrested under sections 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty), 376 (gang rape), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt) and 34 (common intention) of the IPC.
Late evening on Tuesday, they were produced before the court of judicial magistrate and have been remanded in police custody till April 23.
