The best voices, gigs and bands to catch as NH7 Weekender heads to Pune
Steven Wilson, who enthralled the crowd at the Shillong leg of NH7 Weekender inâu00c2u0080u00c2u0088October, is set to be a showstopper this weekend
Good weather, affordable booze and a host of artistes complete the NH7 Weekender essay. The musical thesis on display will return to Pune for the seventh edition as the spotlight will follow big acts, British singer-songwriter Steven Wilson and sitar player Anoushka Shankar. But some homegrown bands and solo musicians are promising too, and these talented Indie acts shouldn’t be missed. Here’s the lowdown.

Thaikkudam Bridge
Language no bar
Kerala-based band Thaikkudam Bridge upped their ante through a television show called Music Mojo, on Kappa TV, and built their fan base. In fact, they were on the event’s most-wanted list. Formed by cousins Govind and Siddharth Menon, the group borrows from all genres and sing in English as well as Malayalam. Call it a husky, grungy version of Ricky Martin's Livin La Vida Loca or a core Chekele by Avial — it’s on their menu.

Dream pop duo
When Rock took lead in the industry, all youngsters wanted to play the guitar and be the star. Singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Nischay Parekh and drummer/music producer Jivraj Singh were born in the same period but wanted to keep Pop alive. Parekh & Singh have an honest, jovial approach to telling stories. Their sound is fresh and pristine.

Born to vocalist Jayashree Singh and bassist Gyan Singh, Jivraj underwent training with Skinny Alley and Pinknoise (their family band, with Amyt Datta on guitar) before experimenting with sounds.

Parekh’s debut album Ocean pleased many. The duo recently inked an international deal with Peace Frog Records. Watch out for the track I Love You Baby, I Love You Doll.
Rhythm and protest
Rhythm Shaw is a 20-year-old guitarist from Kolkata who can slap, play a melody and add a Classical bend. Shaw’s influences come from Jazz, Funk, Gospel, Carnatic and Metal. Still in his early days, he has worked with AR Rahman and Louiz Banks. Also check out Insrhy Master and Titan.
Imphal Talkies and The Howlers is another band that will turn heads. They are known for their protest music. The track Lullaby became an instant hit three years ago. Most of their work is based on the insurgency and unfair politics in the region.
