Patiala district's Lakhwinder Singh, a 28 year-old, who migrated to Australia in 2007 was stabbed to death by unknown assailants who forced their way into his Melbourne home in what is being seen as yet another case of a racial attack on Indians in Australia.

The Australian police have arrested one of the assailants, a 37 year-old man named Thy Sok, who is reported to be a Vietnamese national known to Singh, according to the police statement. Singh, worked as a farm helper, married Beant Kaur in 2007 and moved to Melbourne to find better job opportunities.

Singh's wife who was on a visit to India, broke down at her Rajpura residence on hearing the shocking news. "He had no enemies. I don't know why he was targeted," she said. "My brother-in-law Sukhdip Singh informed me on Friday that Lakhwinder had been stabbed to death. We don't have any more information," said Kulwinder Singh, the victim's brother. The family has appealed to the external affairs ministry to help them procure a visa to get the body and conduct funeral rites.
