India's rising badminton star PV Sindhu could have easily got bogged down after the draw of the World Championships were released. If the Hyderabadi, ranked 12, had any hope of winning a medal, she had to overcome major challenges, beating World No 1 Wang Yihan and former top ranked Shixian Wang.

Sindhu, 18, managed to get past these Chinese giants to assure a podium finish. Sindhu, who settled for a bronze on Saturday after losing to World No 3 Ratchanok Intanon 10-21, 13-21, said she never underestimated herself.

“I am a bit upset after the loss but I am happy to win the bronze. It was my first World Championship and it is a big victory for me,” Sindhu told PTI. “Actually, the World Championships draw was really tough for me because all the good players were there and I knew I had to play really well.

I had to play Wang Yihan and Shixian Wang, but I didn’t think that I will go on to lose. I was coming off an injury and missed two tournaments, so I just wanted to give my best, my 100 per cent,” she added.u00a0
