London: A sprawling estate on the southern coast of England, best known as a secluded honeymoon spot for Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip and then her son Charles and his former wife Diana, is to be converted into a giant solar farm.

The 86-acre Broadlands Estate in Hampshire has been given planning permission for a solar farm the size of more than 80 football pitches.

The Queen spent her honeymoon there in November 1947 and newly married Prince Charles and Princess Diana also enjoyed the first three days of their honeymoon at Broadlands in 1981, travelling to the estate by train from London Waterloo.

Broadlands also has the distinction of being the former English home of Lord Mountbatten, the last Viceroy of India. But now the country house, which is owned by Lord and Lady Brabourne, will be the new home to 57,000 solar panels. Energy company Solarcentury originally came forward with the bid to build the panels — enough to power more than 4,400 homes — on the site last year.
