Purses of over Rs 20 crore, including trophies worth half a crore, will be up for grabs during the forthcoming Mumbai racing season (2013-14) that will get underway on Sunday, November 17 at the Mahalaxmi racecourse.
The longest racing season in the country will feature 43 race days spread over the next five-and-a-half months, six of those days reserved exclusively for the benefit of various city charities. Nearly 1,200 horses will vie for the rich stakes on offer.
The four Indian Classics, all grade 1 races--the Deltin Casino Indian 1000 Guineas (Dec 15), Deltin Casino Indian 2000 Guineas (Dec 22), Viloo Poonawalla Indian Oaks (Jan 18) & the McDowell Signature Indian Derby (Feb 1) — will as usual be the main attractions of the season, supported by other prestigious races like the Poonawalla Breeders Multi-Million (Feb 23), Byramjee Jeejeebhoy Eclipse Stakes Of India (Feb 9), C N Wadia Gold Cup (March 9), Colts & Fillies Juvenile Championship races (March 16) & the Dr SC Jain Sprint Championship (Feb 9), besides several races for non-Classic horses which will
feature minimum stakes of million rupees.
The MiD DAY Trophy, an extremely popular event among professionals thanks to the glitzy coverage and glamorous atmosphere your favourite newspaper brings to it, has been transformed this year as a handicap contest over seven furlongs and is reserved exclusively for four-year-old horses.
The MiD DAY Trophy is scheduled for Saturday, January 18, 2014.
