In Buenos Aires on Sunday, the Spanish superstar ended a title drought that stretched all the way back to his ninth French Open title at Roland Garros last June. Japan's Kei Nishikori, 25, rose to a career-best fourth and is just fast 260 ranking points adrift of Nadal. Nishikori leapfrogs Britain's Andy Murray, who suffered a shock defeat in Dubai to teenage sensation Borna Coric of Croatia and drops two places.
Serbia's Djokovic remains in first place despite losing to second-ranked Switzerland's Roger Federer in the final of the Dubai Open on Saturday.
