Railway budget could have been better

The Railway Budget presented by Mamata Banerjee yesterday seems to be biased towards West Bengal, feel Punekars. But the fact that there is no increase in passenger fares seems to have kept Punekars happy, besides the promise of some additional trains. Some of the reactions...

Prof Ujjwal K Chowdhury, executive director, ISB&M (International School of Business and Media)
Though Pune is not mentioned as frequently as Mumbai, Delhi or Kolkata in the Rail Budget, there are some things which will help Pune. The fact that the Railway recruitment exams would also be conducted in Marathi should keep the MNS happy. Ten automobile hubs, modernisation of 93 railway stations, introduction of 54 new trains and double decker trains are all going to benefit Pune.

Harsha Shah, Chairperson, Railway Pravasi Sangh
The minister has thrown only bits at Pune. Some new trains have been introduced, like the Bharat Teerth. The introduction of Mushkil Ashan mobile vans will make bookings easier. RPF's Mahila Batallion for the railways is also a positive point.

Akash Gupta, 4th year student, New Law College, Bharati Vidya Peeth
This time, the railway budget brought some interesting trends for Punekars, as they are launching 10 new Durantos, one of which is from Pune to Howrah, on a bi-weekly basis. Other special trains like Bharat Teerth, which will travel to Ratnagiri, Bangalore, Mysore, Tirupati, will also be appreciated.

Ashutosh Mahadik, Amdocs, Six Sigma Black Belt
The budget is pathetic. Considering the connectivity, etc, it's not reasonable enough.u00a0 The system has too many loopholes. No basic consideration for women or senior citizens. This budget introduces new trains for Pune and other cities, but where are the tracks? Pune is a student-dominated city, but the connectivity to other cities; even to Lonavala is poor.
