The Rajya Sabha was adjourned for the day on Tuesday as irate opposition members protested against spiralling prices and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's statement ruling out a parliamentary probe into the working of the Indian Premier League (IPL) and the phone tapping controversy.

The house had been first adjourned in the morning after members from the Left parties, the Samajwadi Party (SP), and the Rashtriya Janata Dal raised slogans against the price rise.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) members were furious with the prime minister for turning down their demand for a joint parliamentary committee (JPC) probe into the phone tapping and the IPL controversy.

With the din continuing unabated when the house reassembled at 12, Rajya Sabha deputy chairperson K Rahman Khan adjourned proceeding tills Wednesday.

The prime minister had Monday night told reporters on the sidelines of the defence investiture ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhawan that the phone tapping and IPL controversy were not fit cases to constitute a JPC.
