Rajkot: Shot selection plays a vital role for any batsman to go on to to play a big innings. And Mumbai opener Prithvi Shaw learnt this vital lesson yesterday on Day Two of the Ranji Trophy semi-final.

The 17-year-old debutant, who accompanied Praful Wahgela to open his team's innings, looked confident early on and despatched Tamil Nadu pacer Aswin Crist to the mid-wicket fence off the very third delivery in his first-class career.

However, two balls later, he tried to hit a fuller and wider delivery outside off-stump but the right-handed batsman only to managed to snick one to the wicketkeeper. He was out for only four runs.

On a batting-friendly pitch at the Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium here in Khandheri, most wickets have fallen due to the batsmen's own fault. Shaw too paid heavily for his first lesson in the domestic tournament. After his dismissal, seasoned batsmen Suryakumar Yadav and Waghela displayed the right temperament and technique needed to survive on such a track. Mumbai's head coach Chandrakant Pandit had a word with the teenager after his five-ball stay at the crease.

Though inexperienced, the question remains, whether there was any need for Shaw to play such a rash shot, and that too with few overs remaining for the luncheon interval. One can only hope that he makes amends in the second innings.
