The probe panel report on spot fixing submitted by Anti-Corruption Unit chief Ravi Sawani to the Board of Control for Cricket in India's disciplinary committee has begun raising questions in various quarters.
They are questioning the basis of Sawani’s ‘inquiry-cum-investigation’ report that led to the life bans on S Sreesanth and Ankeet Chavan last week.
“We cannot give all the documents and evidences to BCCI because they are now the court’s property. Without the court’s order we can’t provide case details,” SN Srivastava, a Special Commissioner of Delhi Police told MiD DAY yesterday.
“But we have provided whatever was required by him. If he is satisfied with what he got from us, then its fine,” added Srivastava. Prima facie, it seems Sawani’s report is based on Sreesanth’s confessional statement to Delhi Police. But such confessional statements can be challenged in court.
When contacted by the paper, Sawani said: “I am not authorised to discuss my report with the media. Please talk to the BCCI media manger for details.”
Srivastava was unwilling to comment on Sawani’s findings, claiming: “Mr Sawani is an inquiry officer of the BCCI. On the other hand, we at Delhi Police are conducting our own investigation.
If you ask me about my investigation, I am in a position to tell you whether I am satisfied or not. But I can’t comment on Mr Sawani’s findings.
” It may be recalled that it was Srivastava’s special cell that brought spot fixing to the fore and made several arrests that rocked the cricket world. The Delhi Police, however, was earlier pulled up by the court hearing the case.
Before granting bail to Ajit Chandia, the Saket court judge directed Delhi Police commissioner to re-examine the case. The court observed that there were some “missing links” in the prosecution’s case.u00a0
