Recession claims vehicle sales too

RECESSION has hit vehicle sales and registrations. A small indicator is the number of new motorcycles registered at various Regional Transport Offices in the city.

In 2007, Andheri RTO registered 3,555 motorcycles in November, while in 2008 the figure dropped to 2,402 in the same month. Similarly, the total number of motorcycles registered in 2007 from April to November was 20,206; for the same period in 2008, it hovers at 17,755.

The registrations are worse at the Tardeo RTO, the number of motorcycles registered has seen more than a 40 percent slump, from 15,264 in 2007 to 8,563 in 2008.

Car registrations are also on a downslide; the number of cars registered in Tardeo last year from April to November 2007 was 9,041 while the same in 2008 is 7,309. November is the worst hit, as the number of cars registered in November 2007 was 2,438 and the same in 2008 totals to 1,162.

It's not just the registration of motorcycles and cars that has been going south. Even registrations of trucks and lorries, which are an indicator of economic conditions, has gone down, from 121 registrations in 2007 to just 51 in 2008.u00a0
