Cops file case against unidentified driver who fled after accident; deceased include two minor girls aged six and four, their father and a father-son duo
Five people, including two girls, were killed in a freak accident after being crushed between metal pipes loaded on a truck they were travelling in, and the driver’s cabin.
The police have lodged a complaint against the driver, who fled the spot after the accident, which took place on Pune-Solapur highway near Dalaj village in Indapur taluka yesterday morning.

The deceased have been identified as Balaji Birajdar (45) and his daughters, Nikita (6) and Shetal (4), residents of Hadapsar, and Saru Bansode (45) and his son Ganesh (18) of Shivajinagar. Balaji’s wife Sunita (40), had a narrow escape, as she had moved to the rear of the truck minutes before the mishap.
Sudden death
According to the police, the accident occurred when the pipe-laden vehicle was moving downhill and the truck driver applied the brakes, which resulted in the pipes breaking free and crushing the victims.
Balbhim Pawar, police constable from Bhigwan police station, said the truck loaded with pipes and was on its way to Hyderabad from Mumbai.
The truck was moving downhill near Dalaj on Pune-Solapur highway at 6 am, when the driver abruptly applied brakes.
The sudden braking
unsettled the metal pipes that were loaded in the truck’s
storage area and they came crashing onto the driver’s cabin, killing the victims on the spot.
Following the incident, a police team from Bhigwan police station and officers of the highway police rushed to the spot to initiate a rescue operation. The pipes were too heavy to be moved manually, so a crane was pressed into action.u00a0
