The teenage son of a retired police officer killed himself with his father’s licensed weapon on Tuesday, allegedly scared of the fact that his college had summoned his parents for his low attendance. The family stays at Versova.

According to the Versova police, the deceased was identified as Ashish Mohite, the son of Police Inspector Ganesh Mohite, who retired in 2012. The cop had taken voluntary retirement from the DG controller room under Colaba police station, where he was deputed, and put up his own security firm. Ashish studied in the Science stream at Patkar College, Goregaon.

On Tuesday, Ashish and his elder brother were at home. Their mother had gone to the temple and their father was on his way back from work. At around 7.15 pm, Ashish took his father’s licensed revolver, and, sent a message to his father, telling him he was taking his own life. His brother was in the hall listening to music at a loud volume, so when Ashish shot himself in the forehead, he couldn’t hear anything.

His father rushed home on seeing the message; both parents met below their building and, when they reached home, they found the boy had shot himself. They called the ambulance and the doctor, who declared the teen dead at home. His body was later sent to the nearby Kokilaben Hospital.

Arundhati Rane, senior police inspector from Versova police station, said, “We got the call from the family at 8.10 pm about the incident. He shot himself in the flat when he was alone in his own room.”

Speculating on the reason for the drastic step, both Rane, and a school friend of Ashish’s told this reporter that the boy had been depressed due to his academic performance.

“I’m shocked to know he is no more. He was weak in academics; last year, he had changed his tuition classes because he couldn’t cope up with studies there. Even though he had his family’s support, this has still happened,” said his friend.

However, a close family member, on condition of anonymity, stated, “Ashish wasn’t academically weak; he scored 82 per cent in Std X. He had changed his tuition classes because he didn’t like the previous one. He had done well in Std XI as well. He was actually scared because he was precariously low on attendance and the college had summoned his parents for a meeting.”

The family member added that Ashish was very sensitive, and out of fear of being reprimanded strictly for his attendance issues by his cop father, killed himself.
