Diva secrets
Fashion designers swear by it and people love it. The colour white is back with a bang and is a must-have this summer. While many may argue that the colour never goes out of fashion, it is universally accepted that white becomes more desirable as the mercury rises.

So what makes this colour so popular? Designer Rocky S says white is versatile as you can tone it down or glam it up depending on the occasion. “All you need is the addition or deletion of accessories. It suits everyone and every skin tone. Pale skin shades will look best in bright white shades, whereas a darker skin will be better suited in off-white or creams,” he says.

Nachiket Barve who has dressed the likes of Sonam Kapoor, says that in Indian climate conditions, white is a great option as it gives a refreshing feel. “White works best with pastal shades or with ivory, off white and graphic prints. I would recommend trying a white top with Khadi palazzos this season. Also, white with blush pink pants and a neon shrug is a personal favourite,” says Barve.

Designer Ana Singh who has designed costumes for films such as Vivah and Umrao Jaan, says one can never go wrong with a simple white silk shirt teamed with a pair of black trousers. “Our very own Lucknowi chikankari work looks sexy and elegant. The macramé fabric and white lace comes a close second. You could also experiment wearing a white peplum skirt with a black top,” she explains.

Pria Kataria Puri, who dressed Priyanka Chopra and Mahie Gill in the Zanjeer remake, says it is important to remember that only one aspect of the look should stand out when wearing white. “It could be your dress, your handbag, your shoes, accessories, anything at all. Make sure that only one aspect is making the statement. You wouldn’t want people to lose focus. For me, white with chunky tribal jewellery is a great look,” she says.

Colour of the night
Guess what? White works equally well after dark, say designers. “White with metallic colours such as silver, gold and copper gets my thumbs up for an evening wear. White as an accessory is great, too. You could wear a plain grey dress and accessorise it with a white necklace or earrings. It will look stunning,” says Barve. Singh also recommends the colour with dull silver or gold.

Puri has a different view when it comes to white accessories. For her, investing in them is a no-no. “While I endorse the idea of a plain white chiffon saree, or lehengas and sarees with chikankari work and white gowns, I am not in favour of white accessories. All of them, including clutches, belts and shoes die out very soon and makes them look old and cheap after a while,” she says.

It’s not just the white rays of the scorching sun that is set to dazzle this summer it seems.

Five white hot tips
>> Remember that only one aspect of the look should be making a statement. Example, while doing a mix-match, do not use two bold colours or prints.
>> When in a fix, try a simple silk shirt with black trousers. You can never go wrong with the combination.
>> White accessories, though tricky, can be used. Team plain colours like black and grey with white clutch, bag, earrings or a neckpiece.
>>> White with chunky tribal jewellery and oxidised silver, gold or copper is always a hit. It adds glamour to your outfit.
>> White with khadi palazzos and graphic prints have gained popularity this season.
